hound

A category of domestic dog; name is applied to breeds developed for hunting, especially those which track by scent; sometimes used for any hunting dog, including those which track by sight (eg greyhounds, borzois).

A hound is a type of dog that assists hunters by tracking or chasing the animal being hunted.

There are three types of hound, with several breeds belonging to each type:

Type Example
Sighthounds, which follow prey by keeping it in sight. Whippet
Scent hounds, which follow prey by tracking its scent. Basset Hound
Aboriginal hounds, which follow prey by equally using sight, scent, and hearing.
