Founder of the Primitive Methodists, born in Fordhays, Staffordshire, C England, UK. His zeal as a Wesleyan preacher for large open-air meetings received no approval from the leaders of the denomination, and in 1808 he was cut off from the Wesleyan connection. He gathered round him many devoted followers, and formed a new group, adopting the title of Primitive Methodists in 1810; colloquially, they were sometimes also called Ranters.

The son of Joseph and Ellen Bourne, a carpenter by profession, he was considered a radical preacher among the Methodists. He was expelled in 1808 when refusing a ban on camp meetings, taking his roughly 200 followers to found the Camp Meeting Methodists, only to join William Clowes' Clowesites 1811 in Staffordshire, forming Primitive Methodism.
