Baseball player, born in Cranston, Rhode Island, USA. During his 17-year career as an outfielder (18881906), mostly with the Boston Nationals, he posted a lifetime batting average of ·328, and established the major league record for the highest batting average in a season (·438) in 1894. He was elected to baseball's Hall of Fame in 1945.
