After listening to an interview with Jackie Winter, recorder player, today I was suddenly reminded of hearing the Dolmetsch family at a concert for schoolchildren given at the long-gone Majestic cinema in Staines, Middlesex. I was still at primary school so this would have been around 1949 I guess. It was a rare school outing and I was captivated by the music, then as now. To find so much information on the Dolmetsch Foundation has been immensely fascinating. My children played recorders, one of them particularly well. I wish schools would accord them some greater value than a 'starter' for other instruments. But as long as the Foundation exists some will find beauty and pleasure in such a clean, authentic instrument.
