A North American Indian people concentrated in the Great Lakes area, speaking Iroquoian languages of the HokanSiouan family, c.80 000 (2000 census). Mostly settled in villages in longhouses, the women farmed, and the men hunted, fished, traded, and defended the communities from attack. They fought many wars with their neighbours, enslaving captives or absorbing them into the community.
