jeep - Jeep lineup

The name given to a general purpose (GP) light vehicle developed in World War 2 for the United States Army. It became particularly renowned for its exceptional sturdiness and capability for operating on rough terrain, because of its high clearance and four-wheel drive. After the War, its easy availability, alongside its technical features, laid down the standard against which later specialized rough-terrain working vehicles (eg the Land Rover) developed. With the boom in leisure in the 1970s, there arose a market for non-working rough-terrain vehicles in the USA, and thence worldwide, which led to the manufacture of such types as the Range Rover.
