John (Arthur Thomas) Robinson

Anglican clergyman and theologian, born in Canterbury, Kent, SE England, UK. He studied at Cambridge, and lectured there until his appointment as Bishop of Woolwich (1959–69). In 1963 he published Honest to God, which he described as an attempt to explain the Christian faith to modern society. It scandalized the Conservatives, became a best seller, and blocked his chances of further ecclesiastical advancement. He also made weighty - and more orthodox - contributions to biblical studies in other volumes, including Jesus and His Coming (1957), The Human Face of God (1973), and Redating the New Testament (1976).
