John (Joseph) Carty

Electrical engineer, born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA. He contributed to the development of telephone wires and technology. In 1879 he worked for the Bell Telephone Co in Boston, and was in charge of the cable and switchboard departments at Western Electric (1887–9). He joined the American Telephone and Telegraph Co (1907–30), and was vice-president from 1919.
