Jurek Becker - Works available in English translation

Writer, born in ?ód?, C Poland. After 1945 he lived in East Berlin, moving to the W part of the city in 1977. He wrote novels of tragic irony, such as Jakob der Lügner (1969, filmed 1974), Irreführung der Behörden (1973), Der Boxer (1976), Bronsteins Kinder (1986, filmed 1991), and Amanda herzlos (1992), which dealt with the effects of Nazi persecution of the Jews and problems of everyday life in the German Democratic Republic. He also produced scripts, including those for the television series Liebling Kreuzberg (1986–90).

Jurek Becker (* September 30, 1937, Łódź (Poland), † March 14, 1997, Berlin) was a German writer.
