Writer and Slavicist, born in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. The less well-known brother of Gerard Reve, he completed his Slavic studies to become a professor. Karel is mainly known for his polemic essays and columns about the former USSR and Marxism. Although he grew up in a communist family, he developed a strong anti-communist attitude which is expressed in Het geloof der kameraden (1969, The Conviction of the Comrades). In addition to his works on Eastern Europe, he wrote about Dutch literature and translated Russian literature, including the works of Toergenjew.
Karel van het Reve (May 19, 1921 - March 4, 1999) was a Dutch writer, translator and literary historian, teaching and writing on Russian literature.
He was born in Amsterdam and was raised as a communist.
He is considered to be one of the finest Dutch essayists, his interests ranging from the fallacies of Marxism to nude beach etiquette.
His brother, Gerard Reve, was one of the great Dutch post-war prose writers.
