Karen

Sino-Tibetan-speaking, ethnically-diverse groups of S Myanmar (Burma). With Burmese independence (1948), fighting broke out between government and groups identifying themselves as Karen, wanting autonomy. Sometimes divided into White Karen and Red Karen, they have united in common opposition to Burmese control. In the late 1980s many fled to refugee camps in Thailand.
