Konrad III - Royalty, Surnames

The first king of the Staufer (Hohenstaufen) dynasty, the son of Frederick of Swabia. In 1125 he unsuccessfully contested the crown of Italy with Emperor Lothar III; when the emperor died, the princes of Germany offered Konrad the throne, and he was crowned at Aachen (7 Mar 1138). His reign saw the beginning of the conflict between Welfen and Staufer dynasties. When St Bernard of Clairvaux preached a new crusade, Konrad travelled to Palestine with a large army (1148), but the enterprise failed. Konrad nominated his nephew Frederick I Barbarossa as his successor.
