Painter, born in Rottweil, SW Germany. He joined the Basel guild of painters in 1434, and spent most of his life in what is now Switzerland. His extremely realistic style suggests that he was aware of the work of his contemporary Jan van Eyck. The only signed and dated painting of his which survives is a late work, Christ Walking on the Water (1444, Geneva), remarkable because it is set on L Geneva - the earliest known recognizable landscape in European art.
