Kosrae (pronounced [koʊˈʃɹaɪ] in English), also known as Kusaie, is an island in Micronesia. It is a state of the Federated States of Micronesia with a population of 7,317 (1994 census) and a part of the Caroline Islands. The coral reefs that surround the island are kept in pristine shape through an extensive mooring buoy system maintained by concerned residents and volunteers.
Lush vegetation and steep mountains keep the island largely undeveloped. This has led to the island being called "the island of the sleeping lady."
There is an airport at the northwestern coast of the island with flights from Hawaii and Guam.
TV show Lost, has also been linked to the island. 'The Numbers' (4 8 15 16 23 42) from the show correspond to a longitude (4.815 N 162.342 E) not far from the island.
