Lear - Surname

A legendary king of Britain, first recorded in Geoffrey of Monmouth, though his name resembles that of the Celtic god of the sea. The son of Bladud, he reigned for 60 years. In his old age two of his daughters, Goneril and Regan, conspired against him, but the third daughter, Cordelia, saved him and became queen after his death. (The story is changed by Shakespeare, so that she dies.) Leicester is named after him.
