In the Middle Ages, a county and later a duchy covering part of the present-day Belgian province of Liège and the S of the Dutch province of Limburg. It was originally controlled by the dukes of Nether Lotharingia, but was claimed by the dukes of Brabant. Eventually most of it was added to Brabant after the Battle of Woeringen (1283), with parts to Gelre and the bishopric of Liège. South Limburg was conquered by Frederick Henry of Orange in 1632, and became part of the Generality territory. In 1661 it was partitioned, with Spain retaining the N apart from some areas round Maastricht, and after the War of the Spanish Succession the N (Spanish Upper Gelre) was again partitioned between the Republic and Prussia. Present frontiers result from the Treaty of Vienna (1738) and the Belgian Secession in 1830, which made part of it a dukedom in the German Union until 1866, when it finally became part of the Netherlands.
