The scientific study of freshwater lakes and ponds, including their equatic ecology, biology, chemistry, and physical characteristics. Palaeolimnology is the study of lake sediments to infer past lake conditions.

Limnology traditionally is closely related to hydrobiology, which is concerned with the application of the principles and methods of physics, chemistry, geology, and geography to ecological problems.
