Tennis player, born in Palos Verde, California, USA. In 1996 she won the Olympic gold medal and finished the season ranked ninth, her second top-ten finish in three years. In 1997, she won four titles, in 1998 three. In the same year, she reached the quarter finals of the Wimbledon championship, the competition she won in 1999, beating Steffi Graf, which advanced her world ranking to number 1. She won the Australian Open title in 2000. She began 2005 and 2006 as the world number 1.
