A member of the cat family (Panthera leo), native to Africa and NW India (in prehistoric times was almost worldwide); brown; male with mane of long dark hair; inhabits grassland and open woodland; often territorial; lives in ‘prides’ averaging 15 individuals; the only cat that hunts in groups; eats mainly large grazing mammals.
