Los Alamos

35°52N 106°19W, pop (2000e) 11 900. Community in Los Alamos Co, N New Mexico, USA; 56 km/35 mi NW of Santa Fe in the Jemez Mts; a nuclear research centre since 1943; the first nuclear weapons were developed here during World War 2; government control ended in 1962.

Los Alamos usually refers to the United States national laboratory in Los Alamos, New Mexico which was founded during the World War II effort to develop the atomic bomb (the Manhattan Project). The facility was one of the two laboratories developing the USA's nuclear weapons during the Cold War, and is today a major laboratory for both classified and unclassified scientific research:
