An aquatic mammal, found from Brazil to SE USA, and in W Africa; inhabits shallow coastal seas and rivers; large rounded body; short head with square muzzle; front legs are flippers; no hind legs; tail ends in a flat horizontal disc; eats underwater plants. (Order: Sirenia. Family: Trichechidae, 3 species.)
