A tough perennial (Ammophila arenaria) with creeping rhizomes, native to coasts of W Europe; leaf-blades inrolled, panicles spike-like. It is a pioneer colonizer, adapted to dry conditions, and able to withstand burial by drifting sand. It is often planted on dunes as a sand-binder. (Family: Gramineae.)
