Writer, born in Stockton, California, USA. She studied at the University of California, Berkeley (1962 BA, teaching certificate 1965). She married Earll Kingston (1962), and taught at a variety of high schools in Hawaii and California (19659) and at the college level (1970). She divided her time between Hawaii and Studio City, CA. In her books she often blended legend and autobiography, as in The Woman Warrior: Memoirs of a Girlhood among Ghosts (1976) and China Men (1980). She also wrote many stories and articles for periodicals.

She was born as Maxine Ting Ting Hong, the first of six children to a laundry house owner in Stockton, California.
Her works often reflect on her cultural heritage and blend fiction with non-fiction. Among her works are The Woman Warrior (1976), awarded the National Book Critics Award for Nonfiction, and China Men (1980), given the same award. Her most recent books are To Be The Poet and The Fifth Book of Peace.
She was awarded the 1997 National Humanities Medal by President of the United States Bill Clinton.
She married Earll Kingston in 1962.
Maxine was honored as a 175th Speaker Series writer at Emma Willard School in September 2005.
