Civil servant, and managing director and chairman of the International Monetary Fund (19872000), born in Bayonne, SW France. Educated in Paris, he served in the Treasury (19606) before spending two years as part of the French delegation to the EEC. Returning to the Treasury in 1968, he became its director in 1982 and also chairman of the monetary committee of the EEC (19824). Deputy-director of the Bank of France from 1982, he became its director in 1984, a post he held until he was appointed managing director of the IMF.
Michel Camdessus (born 1 May 1933) was Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) from 16 January 1987 to 14 February 2000.
Born in Bayonne, France, Mr. Camdessus was educated at the University of Paris and earned postgraduate degrees in economics at Institut d'Etudes Politiques de Paris (Sciences Po) in Paris and the École nationale d'administration.
