Critic and novelist, born in Mons-en-Baroeul, W France. He studied at the Sorbonne, became lecturer at the University of Manchester ((19513), and taught at Thessaloniki (19545) and Geneva (19567). A leading exponent of the nouveau roman, his novels include Passage de Milan (1954), L'Emploi du temps (1956, Prix Féréon), La Modification (1957, Prix Renaudot), and Degrés (1960). Among later works are Portrait de l'artiste en jeune singe (1967), the non-fiction Boomerang (1978), and several volumes of poetry, his collection A la frontière appearing in 1996. He also collaborated on an opera, Votre Faust (1962) with Henri Pousseur.
