New Testament character, who appears only in John (1.4551 and 21.2). He is said to have been brought to Jesus by Philip, and is one of the first to confess Jesus as Son of God, King of Israel. He does not appear by this name in any list of disciples in the synoptic Gospels, however; possibly he was not one of the 12 or even a historical individual at all, despite some attempts to identify him with Bartholomew or Matthew in the synoptic lists of the 12 disciples.
