Omaha (Indians)
A Siouan-speaking North American Plains Indian group, originally from the Atlantic seaboard, who migrated to Minnesota in response to European colonial settlement. In the late 17th-c the Dakotas, who had obtained guns through trade, pushed them into Nebraska, where they farmed and hunted buffalo. In 1854 they sold most of their land to white settlers, but were granted some land by the government in 1882. They now live on reservations in Nebraska.
