Ouida - Bibliography

Novelist, born in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, E England, UK. Her pen-name was a childish mispronunciation of Louise. She studied in Paris, settled in London, and began contributing stories to magazines. Her first novel was Held in Bondage (1863), followed by Strathmore (1865), and she was soon established as a best-selling writer of hot-house romances with powerful narratives. She spent much time in Italy, settling in Florence (1874), where she lived lavishly. She wrote almost 50 books, mainly novels, but also animal stories, essays, and tales for children. Eventually her royalties dried up, she fell into debt, and her last years were spent in destitution.
