Overijssel - Geography, Municipalities

Dutch province N of the Ijssel between Gelderland and Drenthe, with Zwolle as the provincial capital. In prehistoric times it was occupied by people of the Beaker culture, who left the monuments known as Hunebedden. In written history it was the territory of the Chamavi, Bructeri, and Tubantes. After the break-up of the Carolingian empire, it officially became part of the bishopric of Utrecht and subject to the various territorial conflicts (with Holland, Friesland, Brabant, Gelre, etc.) of that bishopric. The name of Overijssel dates from the mid-15th-c. In 1527 Charles V acquired the territories of the bishopric, and as a province Overijssel joined the Union of Utrecht in 1579. Part of it took the Spanish side, but was reconquered by Maurice of Orange and involved in subsequent conflicts of Dutch history. It was temporarily occupied by Munster and Cologne in the 1670s and was a strong supporter of patriot movement a century later. It was finally enlarged in 1942 by the addition of the North-East Polder.
