Patricia (Hope) Hewitt - NHS never had it so good, Publications

British stateswoman, born in Camberra, Australia. Educated in Canberra, Cambridge, and Oxford, she worked in a number of voluntary organizations before becoming general secretary of the National Council for Civil Liberties (1974–83). She was policy co-ordinator and press secretary to the Labour leader Neil Kinnock (1988–9) before becoming deputy director of the left-leaning think-tank, the Institute for Public Policy Research (1989–94). She worked as a management consultant (1994–6) before being elected as Labour MP for Leicester West in 1997. She served as minister for trade and industry (1997–8), economic secretary to the Treasury (1998–9), information technology minister (1999–2001), trade and industry secretary and minister for women (2001–5), and in 2005 was appointed minister for health.

Patricia Hope Hewitt (born 2 December 1948) is a British politician.

In 1971 she joined Age Concern as a press and public relations officer before joining the UK's National Council for Civil Liberties (now Liberty) initially as a women's rights officer in 1973, and for nine years from 1974 as the General Secretary, enduring long-term surveillance by MI5, revealed by Cathy Massiter, a former MI5 officer, in 1985.

NHS never had it so good

In April 2006, Patricia Hewitt claimed that the NHS had had "its best year ever", citing waiting times for hospital treatment.
