Paul (Gray) Hoffman

Industrialist and government official, born in New York City, New York, USA. Starting as a salesman at Studebaker (1910), he led that company out of bankruptcy in 1935. An economic adviser to President Roosevelt, he later administered the Marshall Plan (1948–50) to speed economic recovery in Europe after World War 2. He also led the Ford Foundation (1951–3) and the United Nations Development Programme (1966–72).

Paul Hoffman is host of the PBS television series, "Great Minds of Science." Author of at least ten books, he has appeared on CBS This Morning and The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer as a correspondent. Hoffman is also a puzzlemaster using the pseudonym Dr. Crypton. He designed the puzzle in the 1984 book Treasure: In Search of the Golden Horse. He also wrote a book on Paul Erdős called The man who loved only numbers.
