Writer, born in Acton, London, UK. He studied at Cambridge, and spent some time at Yale. He is chiefly known for his biographical studies of Pound, T S Eliot, Dickens, and Thomas More, and also for his fiction, which includes The Last Testament of Oscar Wilde (1983), Hawksmoor (1985, Whitbread), First Light (1989), Dan Leno and the Limehouse Golem (1994), Milton in America (1996), and The Lambs of London (2004). His other work includes poetry, television criticism, and regular reviews for The Times since 1986. Later works include The Life of Thomas More (1998), The Plato Papers, a Novel (1999), London: The Biography (2001), and Shakespeare: The Biography (2005). In 2003 appeared the first two volumes of his Voyages Through Time series for children: The Beginning and Escape from Earth.
Peter Ackroyd (born October 5, 1949, London) is an English author.
His career started in poetry, including works such as London Lickpenny (1973) and The Diversions of Purley (1987).
Ackroyd worked at The Spectator magazine between 1973 and 1977 and became joint managing editor in 1978.
Ackroyd has always shown a great interest in the city of London and one of his most recent works, London: The Biography, is an extensive and thorough discussion of London through the ages.
