French statesman and prime minister (19312, 19356, 19424), born in Châteldon, C France. He became a lawyer, deputy (1914), and senator (1926), before serving as premier. From a position on the left, he moved rightwards during the late 1930s, and in the Vichy government was Pétain's deputy (1940), then his rival. As prime minister, he openly collaborated with the Germans. Fleeing after the liberation to Germany and Spain, he was brought back, charged with treason, and executed in Paris.
