Painter, born in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. He worked in Antwerp (1535c.55), the first of a family dynasty of painters. Few of his religious altarpieces survived the turmoils of the Reformation. He is best known for paintings of everyday life and contemporary domestic interiors, but these frequently include some religious reference.
Pieter Aertsen (1508–1573), called "Long Peter" because of his height, was a Dutch historical painter.
As a youth, he distinguished himself by painting domestic scenes. Several of his best works including altarpieces in various churches, were destroyed in the Netherland's religious wars.
An excellent specimen of his style is a painting of the crucifixion of Jesus, (as of 2005, on display in the Antwerp Museum). In the official books of the Academy he is known as "Langhe Peter, schilder" (Long Peter, painter). Three of his sons are acclaimed painters, and his other pupils included his nephew, Joachim Beuckelaer.
