Dutch admiral, born in Amersfoort, C Netherlands. He was appointed Dutch admiral of the United East-Indian Company (VOC) and Governor General of the Dutch East Indies, where he established the factory at Bantam. He expanded the Company's power, particularly in the Moluccas, and chose Jacatra as the site for the future VOC headquarters. He was drowned at sea during his voyage home.
Pieter Both (1568, Amersfoort - March 6, 1615, Mauritius) was the first Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies.
Not much is known of his early years. When the newly founded Dutch East India Company set up a government for the Dutch East Indies, Pieter Both was invited to become the Governor-General.
After he relinquished his position as Governor-General to Gerard Reynst, he left for the Netherlands with four ships.
The second highest mountain of Mauritius is named after him.
