sect

A religious sect founded by a group of Christian evangelicals in 1829 in Dublin, Ireland. It spread to England, where in 1832 a meeting was established at Plymouth, Devon. Millenarian in outlook, the sect is characterized by a simplicity of belief, practice, and style of life based on the New Testament. By 1848 they had split into the ‘Open’ and the ‘Exclusive’ Brethren.
