Film director, born in Stockholm, Sweden. He studied natural science, then art, but preferred photography. His first short film won awards, and resulted in a contract with the major studio, Svensk Filmindustri. He made a series of prominent nature films which, though magical at times, emphasize the cruel and dramatic aspects of animal life. Titles include Människor i stad (1947, Rhythm of a City) for which he won an Oscar for Best Short Film and Indisk by (1951, Indian Village). His first major feature was Det stora äventyret (1953, The Great Adventure), filmed on a farm, using no professional actors.
Arne Sucksdorff (February 3, 1917 - May 4, 2001) was a Swedish movie director, considered one of cinema's greatest documentary filmmakers. His works include Pojken i trädet (The Boy in the Tree) and the Academy Award-winning Människor i Stad (Symphony of a City )
In the early 60s, he moved to Rio de Janeiro, where he taught cinema at the film school and continued making documentaries, such as Mitt hem är Copacabana (My Home Is Copacabana).
