art therapy

The use of self-expression through drawing and painting as a form of treatment for emotional problems. It was introduced to England during the 1940s as a result of a collaboration between artist Adrian Hill and psychotherapist Irene Champernowne. Self-expression through drawing, painting, and collage is combined with psychotherapy as a way of releasing emotional tension, and also to allow the therapist to interpret the meaning of symbols in the work which can give insight into the content of the subject's subconscious mind.

Art therapy combines traditional psychotherapeutic theories and techniques with specialized knowledge about the psychological aspects of the creative process, especially the affective properties of different art materials.

According to the American Art Therapy Association, art therapy is based on the belief that the creative process involved in making art is healing and life-enhancing. Art therapists are professionals trained in both art and therapy and hold a master's degree in art therapy or a related field. UK
