Actor, born in Ilkeston, Derbyshire, C England, UK. He studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London (1968–70), and went on to join a repertory company in Exeter. He gained work in the West End and in television, and became well known as ‘Wolfie’ in the popular sitcom Citizen Smith (1977). He has gone on to a prolific career in television, films, and the stage, including Shakespearean roles. In musical theatre, his notable performances include Me and My Girl (1987, Tony Award, Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor) and Oliver! (1997, Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor). Later television work includes the series GBH (1991, BAFTA), Hornblower (1998–2003), My Family (2001– ), and Jericho (2005).
