runner bean

A twining perennial (Phaseolus coccineus) growing to 5 m/16 ft, native to tropical America; leaves with three broadly oval leaflets; pea-flowers scarlet or less commonly white, in stalked clusters from the leaf axils; pods up to 40 cm/16 in long, rough, containing large red, kidney-shaped seeds, veined like marble, purple-black. It is a common garden vegetable, widely cultivated for the edible young pods. Dwarf, non-climbing varieties are also grown. (Family: Leguminosae.)
