From the early 17th-c to the early 19th-c, an important feature of French culture, where artists and intellectuals gathered at the house of an aristocratic lady to discuss artistic, scientific, and social matters, and which provided many famous writers with a social base. Famous hostesses included Mme de Staël and Mme de Récamier.
