The cultural, political, organizational, and typically geographical separation of one group of people from another. It is often based on perceived ethnic or racial divisions, an extreme example being apartheid (literally separateness) in S Africa, where physical segregation between whites and blacks was most apparent (eg in public transport, washrooms, housing, sport). It also characterized the period of black slavery in the USA, generally being associated with the exploitation of poorer ethnic groups by a politically dominant elite.
Segregation means separation.

Traffic: The separation of a person who is traveling from others according to a group classification (such as pedestrian, bicyclist, or motorist). Criminal justice: To keep an inmate of a prison separated from the other prisoners whenever possible. This is usually resorted to when the inmate fights with other prisoners, or as an added punishment onto a prison sentence. Securities: Security segregation is the separation of assets belonging to customers from the assets of the financial institution holding them. American History: Often used simply to refer to a specific period in U.S. history, beginning with the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 and ending with the Brown v. See racial segregation.
