silver fir

An evergreen conifer native to the temperate N hemisphere; foliage often silvery or bluish; needles leathery, leaving distinctive circular scars when shed; cones breaking up to release seeds when ripe. Widely grown for timber and as ornamentals; its resin yields Canada balsam. It is sensitive to polluted air, and does not thrive in or near industrial areas. (Genus: Abies, 50 species. Family: Pinaceae.)
