Sir Frank (Athelstane) Swettenham

Colonial administrator in Malaya, born in Belper, Derbyshire, C England, UK. He was British resident in Selangor (1882) and Perak (1889–95), then resident-general in the Federated Malay States (1896–1901). Knighted in 1897, he was governor and commander-in-chief of the Straits Settlement (1901–4), and became an authority on Malay language and history, writing a number of books on the subject. Port Swettenham, Selangor, is named after him.

Sir Frank Athelstane Swettenham GCMG CH (1850 - 1946) was the first Resident General of the Federated Malay States (part of the then Royal Colonies, now independent Malaysia) which was formed by combining a number of kingdoms.

He was one of close to forty former British empire officials to actually oppose the Malayan Union.

He created a dictionary "Vocabulary of the English and Malay languages".
