British soldier, born in Gibraltar. He joined the army at 15 and served with distinction in America, where he was wounded at Bunker Hill and helped capture Ticonderoga (1777). In 1795, as major-general, he took Cape Colony and served as its governor until 1797. He later became Governor-General of Canada (180711).
