Flautist, born in Belfast, NE Northern Ireland, UK. He studied in London and Paris, and played in various orchestras in London and in the Berlin Philharmonic (1969–75). He became a soloist in 1975, and has since followed a highly successful solo career, playing on a solid gold flute of remarkable tonal range. He published an autobiography in 1978, and was involved in a TV series, James Galway's Music in Time, in 1983. He was honoured at the 2005 Classical Brit Awards for his outstanding contribution to music. He received a knighthood in 2001.

Sir James Galway (born December 8, 1939) is an Northern Ireland-born virtuoso flutist from Belfast, often called The Man With the Golden Flute.

He auditioned for the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra under Herbert von Karajan, and was principal flute of that orchestra from 1969 to 1975.

He is Principal Guest Conductor of the London Mozart Players, based at the Fairfield Halls, Croydon, South London.

Most recently, Sir James has performed for the Academy Award-winning ensemble recording the soundtracks of Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings film trilogy.

Trivia

James's nephew Martin Galway is a computer musician famous for his work on Commodore 64 games in the 1980s.

James is known for the exquisite gold, hand-made Muramatsu flute that he performs with.
