British soldier and historian. He studied at Shrewsbury School, the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, and Cambridge, and was commissioned in the Royal Engineers (1937). After service in World War 2 he held several senior posts before becoming military historian in the cabinet office (19778, 19827), and was governor and commander-in-chief at Gibraltar (197882). His publications on military historical and strategic subjects include Attack in the West (1953), Seven Roads to Moscow (1957), The Battle for Italy (1967), and Overlord: Normandy 1944 (1978). Later works include Britain's Triumph and Decline in the Middle East (1996). He was knighted in 1971.
