A range of disciplines within the arts, humanities, and social sciences, including sociology, history, economics, and geography, whose principal concern is the study of various aspects of society. With the development of more sophisticated and scientific analyses, the term is less favoured today and more likely to be replaced by social sciences.

Social studies is the study of history, economics, geography, government, and other social science subjects in primary and secondary schools in North America.

Social studies can also refer to the study of particular aspects of human society at certain post-secondary and tertiary schools worldwide. These schools may exclude certain humanities and natural sciences (such as earth sciences and climatology) which are included in many North American social studies classes.
