County seat of Tuolumne Co, California, USA; located in the Sierra Nevada range; settled by Mexican miners (1848) and named after the state of Sonora in Mexico; gold rush town known as ‘Queen of the Southern Mines’; incorporated as a city, 1851; birthplace of Melvin M Belli and Garfield Bromley Oxnam; as the once profitable mines began to decline, the town developed as a transportation centre; Tuolumne County Museum and History Centre is housed in the former county jail (1866–1963); many historic buildings preserved; 16 km/10 mi to the E is Mi-Wuk Indian village.
