A small songbird, native to the Old World, with some introduced in the New World and Australasia; plumage usually brown/grey; inhabits open country and habitation. The name is also used for some buntings, accentors, and estrildid finches. (Family: Ploceidae, c.37 species; but some authorities place the sparrow in a separate family Passeridae.)
